10 Best Family Campsites in and around Gauteng

Let's be honest — finding a campsite in and around Gauteng that actually works for a family is harder than it should be. You need braai facilities that aren't shared with half of Joburg, a swimming pool that won't terrify you, ablutions that don't make you wish you'd stayed home, and ideally somewhere the dog can come too. We've gone through our directory and picked 10 that tick those boxes. Some are close enough for a Friday afternoon escape. Others are worth the slightly longer drive.

01

Bronkhorstspruit Dam Resort

📍 Bronkhorstspruit · East of Pretoria · ±60km from Pretoria CBD

If you're north or east of Joburg and you want water, this is usually the first call. The dam is big, the grass is flat enough for the kids to run around without disappearing, and there's enough space between stands that you're not sleeping in your neighbour's braai smoke. It's not fancy — but that's kind of the point.

Weekends get busy in season so book ahead. It's the kind of place where you arrive on Friday afternoon and suddenly it's Sunday morning and you can't remember what was so urgent about going home.

Rust de Winter Dam Resorts

📍 Rust de Winter · North of Pretoria · ±85km from Pretoria CBD

Quieter than Harties, less traffic than the Vaal, and genuinely pretty. Rust de Winter is the one Gauteng campers tend to discover by accident and then keep going back to. The dam is good for fishing and swimming, the area doesn't get as overrun on long weekends as the bigger spots, and the drive up through the bushveld north of Pretoria is half the appeal.

If you've done the usual circuit and want something a bit off the beaten track without leaving Gauteng's extended radius, this is the move.

💡 Quick tip Gauteng campsites fill up fast on long weekends — Heritage Day, Easter and the June/July school holidays especially. If you're planning around those dates, book at least 3–4 weeks ahead. Most resorts on KampKiepie show you real availability before you even pick up the phone.
03

Heidelberg Spa & Resort

📍 Heidelberg · South of Joburg · ±60km from Joburg CBD

Warm mineral water pools, good ablutions, and enough space to set up a proper camp. The kids will spend 90% of the time in the pools and you'll spend 90% of the time at the braai — which is exactly what a family camping weekend is supposed to look like. Warm water year-round makes this one worth considering even in the middle of a Highveld winter.

Hartbeespoort Resorts

📍 Hartbeespoort · North West · ±75km from Joburg CBD

Yes, the traffic on the R512 on a Friday afternoon is its own form of suffering. Go anyway. Harties has enough resorts clustered around the dam that you can find something in almost any price range — from basic camping stands on the water to full chalets if the family wants a soft landing. The views are genuinely good and the kids will find something to do no matter what.

We've got several Harties resorts listed — worth filtering by the dam area and seeing what's available for your dates.

Boskop Dam Nature Reserve

📍 Potchefstroom · North West · ±130km from Joburg CBD

Slightly further than the others but worth it if you want a quieter weekend. Boskop is big enough that it doesn't feel crowded even on a busy weekend, the dam is clean, and the camping area has good shade — which matters when you're sitting outside from Friday night through to Sunday afternoon. Potch is a big student town so the surrounding area has decent shops if you forget something.

Dinokeng Game Reserve Campsites

📍 Dinokeng · North of Pretoria · ±60km from Pretoria CBD

Big 5 game reserve within reasonable driving distance of Pretoria — and you can camp inside it. That combination doesn't exist in many places in Gauteng. If you've got kids who've done the Harties and Bronkhorstspruit circuit and want something with a bit more wow factor, Dinokeng is the upgrade. The bush feel is genuine, not manufactured.

🐾 Bringing the dog? Not all Gauteng resorts allow pets — and the ones that do often have specific rules about leads and areas. Always confirm pet policy directly with the resort before you book. On KampKiepie you can filter by pet-friendly resorts to narrow it down first.
07

Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve

📍 Heidelberg · South of Joburg · ±65km from Joburg CBD

One of Gauteng's underrated ones. Good hiking, game in the reserve, and a camping setup that's simple but well-maintained. It doesn't have a pool or a restaurant — if you need those, go elsewhere. But if you want to actually feel like you're out of the city, Suikerbosrand delivers in a way that a lot of the dam resorts don't.

Vaal Dam Resorts

📍 Vaal Dam · South of Joburg · ±90km from Joburg CBD

The Vaal is a classic for a reason. Big water, motorboats, jet skis, fishing, and enough resorts along the bank that you can find something that fits your group. It's busier than some of the other options on this list, but if your kids want to do water sports, there's no better base in Gauteng's extended radius. We've listed several resorts in the Vaal area — the ones on the water tend to go fast.

Resorts around Bela-Bela

📍 Bela-Bela (Warmbaths) · Limpopo · ±100km from Pretoria CBD

Bela-Bela is a proper family camping destination and has been for decades — the warm mineral springs are the main draw, but the number of resorts clustered in the area means you've got real choice in terms of size, price and facilities. Some are big and busy with waterslides and entertainment, others are smaller and more low-key. Either way the water is warm, which makes this one of the few Highveld-adjacent destinations that works just as well in June as it does in December.

Worth the drive from either Joburg or Pretoria — you're on the N1 the whole way, so it's an easy Friday afternoon departure even with traffic.

Buffelsdrift & surrounding Magaliesberg resorts

📍 Magaliesberg · ±120km from Joburg CBD

If you're willing to drive a bit further, the Magaliesberg valley has some of the best family camping in Gauteng's reach. Proper mountains, good air, and resorts that range from basic camping all the way up to glamping and chalets. It's a step up from the dam experience — the landscape feels different and the kids tend to get more genuinely tired, which is the real measure of a good family camping trip.

We've got a good selection of Magaliesberg resorts on KampKiepie. Worth browsing if you haven't explored the area yet.
